Process of Solar PV Testing

Solar PV testing ensures your solar panels are functioning as expected and generating the correct voltage and power. The process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes and involves the following steps:

1. Preparation

  • The technician will arrive on-site and review the solar PV system layout and components.

  • The customer should ensure safe and clear access to the inverter and panel cables prior to the testing.

2. Access to the Inverter

  • Testing requires access to the inverter, where the array string cables connect.

  • Using MC4 connectors, the technician will connect specialized DC testing equipment to the array string cables.

3. Conducting the Test

  • The technician will perform a series of measurements using MC4-compatible testing equipment to evaluate the system's performance.

  • Key parameters measured include:

    • Open-Circuit Voltage (Voc): Voltage generated by the panels when disconnected from the inverter.

    • Short-Circuit Current (Isc): Maximum current produced when the circuit is closed.

    • Power Output (W): Actual power being generated under current conditions.

4. Evaluation and Results

  • The technician will review the results on-site to determine if the PV arrays are generating voltage and power within expected ranges.

  • Any abnormalities or issues will be highlighted and communicated to the customer.

5. Optional Solar PV Test Certificate

  • If the customer provides the panel manufacturer, model, and wattage, we can issue a formal Solar PV Test Certificate for an additional fee of £10 + VAT.

  • This certificate is optional and not essential to confirm whether the PV arrays are generating voltage and power.
